Crochet With Plastic Bags – A Perfect Way to Recycle

Recycling is so important today, everyone should be trying to do it in some way. This is especially true of all the plastics we have. One way that is truly fun and creative for recycling is to crochet with plastic bags. You know those plastic grocery bags that we usually have so many of as we should not really just throw them away. It is much better for our environment to recycle them. Below is how to prepare the bags for crocheting and some ideas on what to make from them.
One method of preparing the bags so you can crochet with plastic bags is the loop one. You have to first lay your bag out flat. This makes it easy to cut the handles and the glued bottom off. While the bag still laying double, you need to fold it over on itself in several times. Then cut 1-inch strips crosswise now you have a number of loops of plastic.
You can then make a chain from these loops by intertwining them. Lay two loops down the table making sure to over lap them on one another. Take the top loop and then work it back under the bottom one and come up into its own loop pull on it until the two loops are securely joined. Repeat this process until you have all the loops joined.
Cut plenty of bags up and loop them together in this method until one long continuous strand of what you could call “plastic-bag yarn”. You can even roll it in a ball as you go. This may use up all your stash of grocery bags if you plan on making things as large as tote bags which is one thing you can crochet with plastic bags. When you think you have enough yarn for your project you will have decide upon what hook size you want to use.
Working with this type of material to crochet with I would choose an H hook or even larger. However it does depend on how tight you want the weave. So play around with a few hook sizes to see which one you like the best.
Now that you have selected your hook size you can simply make your own pattern up if you know enough about crocheting. There are many patterns available online too on what to crochet with plastic bags. Two popular ideas though are tote bags and rugs. These both can be done with just single crochets. This makes them great beginner projects. If you have various colors of plastic bags mixed in together you can even get some great color patterns too in your work.
You can easily make a project in a weekend after preparing the bags. Just think how much fun it will be to show off your creations to your friends. The planet will thank you too for recycling your old grocery bags instead of sending them to the landfills. Have fun discovering what you can crochet with plastic bags.
